Labial reduction

It is not uncommon for a woman to feel dissatisfied with her labia minora (inner lips of the vagina), especially if they are particularly long. Women with large labia can often experience pain during intercourse, feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. This can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and can even lead to sexual dissatisfaction or difficulty.

Summary of the Procedure

Labial reduction, or labiaplasty, is an operation, which reduces the labia (by removing the excess tissue) to a size that the patient finds desirable. It is performed under general anaesthetic.

The procedure can be performed as a day case or an overnight stay.

Postoperative period

After the procedure, the patient awakes with padding and a cold compress in your underwear. Further padding/panty liners may need to be worn for up to three to five days after surgery during which time any swelling and bruising will gradually disappear.

Time off and recovery

In general, ten days to two weeks off work is recommended. With full healing, you can return to swimming after two weeks. Providing the wounds are healed at 2 weeks you could start with gentle swimming. Aerobics, other strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided for at least four weeks. Likewise, horse riding should be avoided until six to eight weeks. Driving can usually be resumed after one to two weeks.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; possibly including scars, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, under or over- correction, pain, and altered sensation. The chances of any complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
