Body Contouring Surgery

Some stubborn areas of fat never seem to respond to dieting or exercise. In such cases, liposuction can help to sculpt and reshape the body. It may or may not eliminate cellulite and it won’t remove any stretchmark scars.

Summary of the Procedure

The process entails making small incisions in the skin, in which small tubes are inserted. The fatty tissue is removed through these tubes with suction. After the excess fat is removed the skin shrinks back to take up its new position. The final result is a reduced and improved contour. The ability of the skin to shrink back depends on the area treated, the elasticity of the skin and the age of the patient.

It is possible to treat several areas at the same time, including hips, inner thighs, outer thighs (saddle-bags), abdomen, buttocks, waist, upper arms, knees, ankles and male breast.

The procedure can be performed as a day case or an overnight stay.

Postoperative period

There will be small stitches and dressings over the incisions together with either a pressure garment or tape on the area. The pressure garment will need to be worn 24/7 for two weeks and then during the day for a further four weeks. The small scars will be hidden in the skin creases.

Time off and recovery

You should be able to return to normal activities within 48 hours of surgery, although this will depend on how much liposuction you have had. It will take up to 6 months for you to see the final results of the procedure.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; possibly including scars, bleeding, infection, bruising, asymmetry, altered sensation over the area, lumpiness, leg blood clots and lung blood clots. The areas of fatty tissue can reaccumulate if one has further weight gain after the surgery. The chances of any complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
