Abdominoplasty

After pregnancy or weight loss, you can be left with an excess of skin and fat in the lower abdomen. Some patients also have separation of the abdominal midline muscles (the six-pack), which increases the bulge of the abdomen. This procedure removes this excess along with any stretch marks and tightens the stomach muscles. The end result of this procedure is a flatter and tighter abdomen. It should not be considered a weight-loss treatment

Summary of the Procedure

In a full abdominoplasty, the area below the tummy button is excised. The skin above is then brought down to the bikini line. A hole is made in this tighter skin through which the tummy button is brought out, thus keeping the relative position of the tummy button. Muscles are tightened to improve the shape and waistline. In some cases, this procedure can be combined with liposuction. There is a scar from hip to hip and another scar around the tummy button.

Postoperative period

After the procedure, the patient awakes with a dressing and a strapping on the abdomen. Drains will be in place to remove any excess blood or fluid and are usually kept in place for 48-72 hours. An abdominal binder or corset will need to be used for 4 weeks following surgery.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; scarring, bleeding, infection, seroma (fluid collection), altered sensation, skin loss, pain, tummy button necrosis and blood clots in the legs or the lungs. The chances of a complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
