Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a procedure to increase the size and fullness of the breasts. There are many reasons why women benefit from breast augmentation, and Anna finds it very rewarding to see the transformation in confidence and self-esteem that her patients experience as a result.

Summary of the Procedure

The increase in size and fullness comes from the addition of an implant either below the breast (sub-glandular) or under the chest muscle (sub-muscular). There are different options for inserting the implant and the location of any post-operative scars will depend on the approach taken:

  • Inframammary approach (under the breast),
  • Periareolar approach (around the nipple),
  • Axillary approach (in the armpit).

Your initial consultation includes a full discussion of which option would be best for you and the results that you want. Silicone implants from well-known manufacturers are used. The main differences between implants lie in the shape (round or tear drop), the projection and the size. Good information about silicone implants can be found at the Department of Health website.

Postoperative period

After the procedure, the patient awakes with dressings over the area of insertion (depending on the approach taken) and support tape for the breasts. Drains are not always used but if they are necessary they usually do not stay in longer than 24- 48hrs. A sports bra (no wires) should be worn 24/7 for four weeks. A properly-fitted under-wired bra can be used after eight weeks. Time off and recovery The exact time varies from patient to patient and can depend on how physically demanding your job is but in general two weeks off is suggested. With full healing you could go back to swimming after three weeks. Aerobics or other strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks. Likewise, you should avoid driving for two weeks after surgery.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; scarring, bleeding, infection, alteration of sensation, breast asymmetry, wound breakdown, capsular formation and capsular contraction. The chances of any complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
