Breast Reduction

Large or heavy breasts can cause discomfort. It is common for women with large breasts to suffer back pain, shoulder ache, irritation of the skin beneath the breasts and painful shoulders (caused by bra straps). For some women, large breasts can be a cause of embarrassment and psychological distress.

Summary of the Procedure

The process (also known as reduction mammoplasty) involves removal of excess fat, breast tissue and skin to reduce the weight and volume of the breasts. The result is smaller, lighter breasts which sit up on the chest wall and are in proportion to your size and height. Which particular technique I use to reshape the breasts varies depending on the patient’s breast size and shape. This is, of course discussed at length during your initial consultation. The site of postoperative scars will depend on which technique is used.

Postoperative period

After the procedure, the patient awakes with dressings over the surgical area and support tape for the breasts. Drains are routinely used and usually stay in between 24-48hrs. A sports bra (no wires) should be worn 24/7 for four weeks. A properly fitted under-wired bra can be used after eight weeks.

It is absolutely normal to have swelling and bruising of the breasts after the procedure, especially in the lower part. This can last for about two weeks. Some leaking of the wounds is common in the first 10 days. Initially, your breasts will be higher and firmer, gradually getting softer with time. You will be able to appreciate the final result three to four months after surgery.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; scarring, bleeding, infection, alteration of sensation, breast asymmetry, wound breakdown, blood clots, and chest infection. The chances of any complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
