Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the excess of male breast tissue. It often has no specific cause and can be particularly common in adolescents and young men. Gynaecomastia can be caused by certain medications. Whatever the reason it can be a cause of worry and embarrassment; a simple procedure can transform the patient’s life.

Summary of the Procedure

There are two main methods to treat gynaecomastia: liposuction and excision. Liposuction is used if the cause of the condition is excess fatty tissue. The process entails making small incisions in the skin, in which small tubes are inserted. The fatty tissue is removed through these tubes with suction. Excisional surgery is used where the problem is an overgrowth of the male breast tissue. That tissue is excised during a small operation. It leaves a small scar under the nipple. Sometimes a combination of excisional surgery and liposuction is used.

Postoperative period

After the procedure, the patient awakes with dressings over the surgical area. In the case of excision, drains are used and usually stay in place for 24-48hrs. A compression garment should be worn 24/7 for four weeks. Swelling is absolutely normal and usually settles within three to six months.

What you need to be aware of

As with any surgical procedure, there can occasionally be complications; scarring, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, concave deformity (too much excision) seroma (fluid collection), altered sensation, and blood clots in the legs or the lungs. The chances of any complication can be reduced by observing the postoperative recommendations above. Smoking is also a risk factor. This subject is always fully discussed during your initial consultation.
